I booked a 3-day private tour to Merzouga with my husband for our anniversary. I had done my research and was honestly sceptical — so many tour operators promise the same thing. What we got was completely different from anything I expected. Our guide Hassan knew every person in every village we stopped at. He knew when the dune light was at its best. He knew which camp had the quietest spot away from the others. When we got to the top of the dune on the second morning, just the two of us and the entire Sahara in every direction, I cried. I am not embarrassed to say that. It was simply the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and we would not have found that spot without him.
